A little respect...

I'm getting on my soapbox for this one. If you don't like it, you can stop reading...though I don't know how any logical person wouldn't agree with me.

Last week I went to deer park mall with my husband, my 5 year old daughter and my 2 year old son. On more than one occasion, I saw a teenage girl dressed inappropriately.

One was in a see-through white crop top with a black bra underneath. She was maybe 14.

One was in shorts that resembled those jean diapers they made for babies awhile back, and a shirt with her belly and boobs hanging out.

One was in a ripped up tshirt that showed all kinds of skin and read, "I'm in Cancun, Bitch". She couldn't have been older than 16.

This infuriated me. First, because they are children dressed like porn stars. Second, because my precious five year old daughter is looking at these girls wondering why they are dressed like that. We, as parents, wonder why our children are becoming so sexually aware at such a young age. We blame magazines, we blame tv, we blame advertisements. All of those things certainly have their influence...but I'm convinced there is something more influential.

Parents.

I wasn't mad at these girls for dressing inappropriately (though I did want to throw blankets over them when I saw them). All I could think of was how on earth their parents allowed them to leave the house wearing clothes like these. Hear the facts: If your daughter is out in public dressed like a giant slut, you've done something wrong. Now I get that children do a lot of stupid things that parents don't know about...and its not always a reflection of bad parenting...but I find it really hard to believe that its difficult to monitor the way your child dresses.

No, I have never raised teenagers. And yes, I'm fully aware of the challenges that come with that. But as parents, do we just surrender to the pressures they are exposed to? I don't think so.

This experience has me looking forward to the challenge of teaching my daughter to be respectful of the body God gave her. It has me looking forward to fighting the pressures of the world FOR HER and WITH HER so that she can rise above it, and grow up understanding what God says about sex and what she should do with it.

We are designed in the image of God. When we disgrace ourselves, disrespect ourselves...we are insulting the very creation of our Lord. Lets teach our children well.

Too true. Kids will rebel, of course, but parents have a HUGE influence that they often assume they can't use. Such a sad thing that so many people have done and continue to do this to their kids.
